I asked one of the maritimo’s if he knew someone who could splice rope as ai had a project that needed doing. I’ll never forget his amazement when he answered “All sailors know how to splice”. I felt embarrassed so I bought this book and taught myself to splice! The snubber I spliced up is still working fine so I can heartedly recommend this book.
tag:www.zero2sixty.ch,2012:Book/332011-11-06T00:00:00Z2011-11-06T17:32:51ZArtA Passion for the Sea
An excellently done book that makes you want to get in your yacht and take off to explore the places Jimmy has been too. We should all be so lucky as to be able to do a small part of this book in our lifetime. There’s so many places to visit, I’m not sure when I’ll every wear this book out but I’ll try!
tag:www.zero2sixty.ch,2012:Book/422011-11-06T00:00:00Z2011-11-06T19:24:44ZArtCruising Guide to the Leeward Islands
An essential guidebook to everything you need to know about sailing in the Leeward Islands. It’s a companion to the Leeward Anchorages book as well.
tag:www.zero2sixty.ch,2012:Book/312011-11-06T00:00:00Z2011-11-06T10:52:00ZArtSailing an Atlantic Circuit
The best one yet on all aspects of an Atlantic circuit. Picked this up while in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria waiting to leave on the ARC. It’s an excellent reference for not just the circuit but weather, customs in the Caribbean, safety and security at anchorage, etc. A very well-crafted book.
tag:www.zero2sixty.ch,2012:Book/412011-11-06T00:00:00Z2011-11-06T19:13:27ZArtWorld Cruising Destinations
Part of my core books to study and learn from in preparing for big passages and a possible circumnavigation in few years.
tag:www.zero2sixty.ch,2012:Book/242011-09-04T03:00:00Z2011-11-02T18:36:46ZArtUnderstanding a Nautical Chart
Wow, I’ve been waiting for a book like this for a while. Crisp, clear defintions of all the symbols you find on nautical charts with detailed explanation on what they mean. A must-have reference on-board.
tag:www.zero2sixty.ch,2012:Book/232011-09-04T03:00:00Z2011-11-02T18:36:46ZArtRules of the Road
One of the hardest parts of sailing for me is to learn all the regulations on who has the right of way in one situation versus another. Likewise, being able to identify what kind of boat is out there are night strictly by its lights escapes me too. This book is going a long way toward helping me overcome these problems. The text and images are clear and I’m actually having a good time learning with this book. Definitely worthwhile to read and keep on-board as a reference tool.
tag:www.zero2sixty.ch,2012:Book/222011-09-01T03:00:00Z2011-11-02T18:36:46ZArtCelestial Navigation
OK, so Celestial Navigation seems ‘old school’ in the world of electronic navigation using Chartplotters, GPS and the like. But, when you are sailing, you have all kinds of time on your hands so why not take some time to learn this skill? Before all the modern ‘stuff’, people have used sextants for navigating and it’s fun on a passage to take some readings to see how close you are to GPS. It’s also a requirement for the RYA YAchtmaster Ocean rating to know how to use a sextant. I have many books on using sextants but this one is simple, to the point and easy to understand even for a guy like me!
tag:www.zero2sixty.ch,2012:Book/212011-06-03T03:00:00Z2011-11-02T18:36:46ZArtThe Complete Yachtmaster
I picked this up on a recent trip to Southampton for my LRC course and have really enjoyed reading this book. Tom is an excellent teacher and his level of understanding shows in his writing style. He covers material that is written about in lots of other books on the subject but somehow his style enables me to understand it better. The illustrations and photgraphs are really first-class and 32 chapters cover evedrything you ever wanted to know about sailing. Truly one of the best books I’ve read lately. I inadvertantly have two of these books and my wife wanted one for herself!
tag:www.zero2sixty.ch,2012:Book/132011-06-02T03:00:00Z2011-11-02T18:36:46ZArtModern Marine Weather
Weather is something I’m rather fond of. When I was an active pilot, it was crucial to get a good understanding of the weather before I took off or landed somewhere. Sailing has a similar need for good weather understanding. The difference being the slower speed of the yacht versus an airplane and the size of the area you need to study the weather. I find my prior knowledge of aviation weather to be a big help in sailing however there are a number of differences that this book covers quite well. Highly recommended.
tag:www.zero2sixty.ch,2012:Book/102011-06-01T03:00:00Z2011-11-02T18:36:45ZArtRYA VHF Radio
This book covers a lot of the same ground as their other book, RYA VHF Handbook but in less detail as it is to be used for preparation for the taking the SRC course. Good book but I would choose only one of these to have on-board
tag:www.zero2sixty.ch,2012:Book/92011-06-01T03:00:00Z2011-11-02T18:36:45ZArtThe Voyager's Handbook
Another classic reference for those us who want to venture beyond the coast. Beth has an extensive amount of first-hand knowledge that she shares with her readers. For me, planning to cross the Atlantic, this book comes at a good time as there’s a lot of information I can directly apply to my challenge. Reading about other people’s experiences in something you want to accomplish is a huge help in pulling it off safely. Thanks Beth!
