While anchored off Roberton Island in the Northland of New Zealand we had a wonderful encounter with some Pacific bottlenose dolphins. Enjoy!

Bubbles rise from the bottom of my glass of Prosecco. I stare through the ripples of condensation, at the golden glow of twilight refracted in the droplets as they slowly roll down the slender stem, one by one, until each vanishes into the white tablecloth the glass is sitting on. At the same time, my toes scrunch into the powdery pink sand beneath our table at the edge of the sea;...
While sailing near the beautiful island of Barbuda, we were joined by a group of 9 dolphins with babies. They slowly swam in front of the bow for about a half hour. We were leaving our anchorage spot just motoring slowly in shallow water while avoiding the coral when they appeared. Most of our other dolphin experiences have been under sail with them riding our bow wave. This time they...
The winter months have passed by too quickly. Since our arrival in the Caribbean last fall, we've enjoyed sailing and spending time with friends in the beauty of this idyllic part of the world. However, hurricane season is approaching (its official start date is the 1st of June) and like the migration of birds, sailing yachts are starting the long passage back to Europe. The tradition...
My cousin Murray and his girlfriend Cee came to visit for a while. Murray will be staying on doing the passage back to Europe while Cee just wanted to get some sunshine and sailing in as a respite from winter in the UK. We had a wonderful time cruising all around Antigua and were lucky enough to spot a humpback whale and dolphins. Another highlight was to be able to see some of the...
While sailing around Antigua today from Carisle Bay on our way to an anchorage in Nonsuch Bay on the east side of the island, Murray spotted a whale breaching up ahead of us. We quickly changed course and motored over to see if we could get close enough for some photos. Luckily this male "Humpback Whale](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/)Humpback_whale was not too worried about our little...
No matter what the size of the yacht, there are only 24 hours in a day. Divide this by the number of crew onboard qualified to stand watch and you have the number of hours each crew member will be standing watch. The longer the passage, the more important this is as fatigue is a cumulative effect. Coming up with the right number of crew for a particular passage is crucial but more so...
Leaving Leixoes to an overcast sky and rain showers around the area we were motor sailing to keep making tracks south. Later in the morning the weather cleared off a bit and the winds came up so we got to sail for a while just in time for another visit from a dolphin pod. This time we had about 100 of them playing around the yacht for a good 30 minutes!
