Passages taken in the Caribbean Sea

My cousin Murray and his girlfriend Cee came to visit for a while. Murray will be staying on doing the passage back to Europe while Cee just wanted to get some sunshine and sailing in as a respite from winter in the UK. We had a wonderful time cruising all around Antigua and were lucky enough to spot a humpback whale and dolphins. Our friend Maya joins us for a week of sailing here in the Caribbean. It was her first time on a sailboat so we planned to start off easy to see how she would handle it. Despite our best efforts, the first day of sailing ended up being the roughest of her entire time with us! We had 25kts of wind, a sea state of 2+meters and our desired direction ended up having us beat into the wind and seas for a few hours. She did great but I wish we could have had an easier day for her! We’ve spent a lovely few days anchored out at the north end of St. Barths in the Anse de Columbier Bay which is a nature reserve. They have put out a number of nice mooring buoys free of charge to encourage folks to use them instead of anchoring. From what we saw, the local turtle population appreciates it! We snorkeled among them for several days and really enjoyed the reef structure as well… More

We had to motor around the southern end of Statia to pick up a nice tack direct to Gustavia. Our sail over was superb with great winds once again and a pleasant motion on the yacht. We had the last of our chicken Roti we got back in English Harbour. Pulling into St. Barths, Tracy and I went to Gustavia to do clearance and some shopping. As usual, St. Barths is very easy to accomplish as it’s all done by computer. We picked up some more nice rum, had an ice cream and dingied back… More

Perfect sailing conditions brought us along the coastline of Nevis and St. Kitts and across to the next island north of them, Statia (Saint Eustaius). A wonderful colonial history of commerce and duty-free trade at the time the other islands were be taxed heavily by Spain, UK and France put this little place on the map. You wouldn’t know it by looking at the harbor of Oranjestad now but at times there used to be 300 ships anchored out front waiting to unload and load cargo… More

No wind for our return to Charlestown, Nevis and the sea state was moderate as well so a long seven hours to get back. Customs was closing at 16:00 so we were trying to get there in time so we could go to dinner on-shore. I arrived at their office at 16:10 and they were kind enough to help out and clear me in but immigration (at the Police station) and paying for our mooring at the Port Authority had to wait untili the next day as they were already closed… More

Well, we planned to make it further around the corner today to Deep Bay up by St. John’s but when we saw the big boats out racing again we just had to stop and enjoy them one more time. The sail from Nonsuch Bay was a little rough (3m seas and 20-25kts of wind) and we were in a broad reach most of the way with the big swells going under the boat. Nothing we nor Feelin’ Good couldn’t handle but in order to make some lunch we decided to put in at Carlisle Bay… More
