Perfect sailing conditions brought us along the coastline of Nevis and St. Kitts and across to the next island north of them, Statia (Saint Eustaius). A wonderful colonial history of commerce and duty-free trade at the time the other islands were be taxed heavily by Spain, UK and France put this little place on the map. You wouldn't know it by looking at the harbor of Oranjestad now but at times there used to be 300 ships anchored out front waiting to unload and load cargo. Twenty-thousand people lived here then to support the trade business. Now the 3,500 inhabitants largely work at an oil storage facility. A pleasant anchorage, a nice dinner in town and we're off for the crossing to St. Barths.
