One of our best anchorages of the 2014 Med sailing season was found here on the west side of Isola di Lipari in the Aeolian Islands just north of Sicilia. High cliffs, caves and swim-throughs, clear water with visibility over 30 meters and perfect temperature for swimming (26.6C). Combine this with a small number of day visitors from the local towns and, by 17:00, leaving it all to just us and nature. Top it off with a magnificent sunset over neighboring Isola Filicudi.

If you are into diving, there are a number of places in the area with depths ranging from 15 to 30 meters. Good snorkeling is available along the bottom of the cliffs and be sure to explore the caves at the waterline.

Caves, swim-throughs and clear water Favorable winds and no swell gave us a really nice night until the Sicilian ferry service started up the next morning and brought some wake as they passed on their way to the other islands. Our anchorage was in crystal clear water with a nice sand bottom. Just about any size boat can anchor here from small to superyacht. Just around the corner is the main town on Isola Lipari with great restaurants, shopping and bars. I found a great barbershop for a haircut and Tracy likewise found a nice hair salon as well. The local specialties are the Arancini and Cannoli so be sure to walk the main street and stop in to try some. These are some very typical Sicilian dishes and are done extremely nicely here in Lipari.

We bought a number of 'extra' arancini to bring back on-board and put in the freezer for another day. They reheat nicely in the oven and are always a favorite with us.
